    1. Hi Michael, thank you for opening up and sharing your situation so honestly. It sounds like you’ve carried the weight of asthma for most of your life, and now with the diagnosis of ABPA on top of it, you want to do everything possible to keep your body strong and avoid another setback. That’s a very thoughtful and proactive approach.

You’re absolutely right—at 66, the goal is not just treating the illness, but also nourishing your body so your immune system, lungs, and overall strength can keep up with the medications and daily life. While nothing can replace the medical treatment your doctors prescribe, there are some nutraceuticals and supportive steps that may help your immune system and lung health over time:

      Nutraceuticals & Supplements Often Considered

(Always discuss these with your doctor before starting, since some can interact with medications like steroids or antifungals often used in ABPA.)

Vitamin D3 – Low vitamin D is linked with poor lung function and increased respiratory infections. Keeping your levels in a healthy range may help immune balance.

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil or algae oil) – These have anti-inflammatory properties that may ease airway inflammation and support heart and brain health.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) – A powerful antioxidant that also helps thin mucus, making it easier to clear your lungs.

Probiotics – Long-term use of steroids and antifungal medications can disrupt gut health, which plays a role in immunity. A high-quality probiotic may help maintain balance.

Vitamin C & Zinc – Support immune resilience and tissue repair, especially during infections or flare-ups.

Magnesium – Plays a role in muscle relaxation, including the muscles around your airways.

      Nutrition & Lifestyle Foundations

Whole-food diet – Focus on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Antioxidants from colorful produce support lung and immune health.

Stay hydrated – Helps keep mucus thinner and easier to clear.

Gentle physical activity – Even short walks or breathing exercises can strengthen lung function and improve energy. Pulmonary rehab programs can be very effective at your stage.

Good sleep – Critical for immune recovery, especially when your body is stressed by both disease and medications.

      Breathing & Lung Support

Pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing can help you get more air out and reduce the feeling of breathlessness.

Avoid irritants – Dust, smoke, molds, and fragrances can worsen asthma and ABPA. Keeping your environment as clean as possible makes a big difference.
