Boots Flu Jab 2026 is a seasonal influenza vaccination service available at participating Boots pharmacies in the UK. Eligible people may be able to receive the NHS flu vaccine free of charge, while private vaccination may also be available for people who do not qualify for NHS vaccination. This guide explains the Boots flu jab price, eligibility, booking process, side effects, timing and important information for the 2026/27 flu season.

The Boots Flu Jab is a seasonal influenza vaccination service available at participating Boots pharmacies in the UK. It provides an accessible way for eligible people to receive the NHS flu vaccine and, for people who are not eligible for the NHS programme, Boots also offers a private flu vaccination service at participating stores. (boots.com)

For the 2026/27 flu season, NHS England has started the programme earlier for some groups. From 1 September 2026, children, pregnant women and some other eligible groups can begin vaccination, while most other eligible adult groups are scheduled to start from 1 October 2026. (NHS England)

What Is the Boots Flu Jab?

The Boots Flu Jab is a vaccination service delivered by trained pharmacy healthcare professionals at participating Boots stores. The vaccination helps the immune system develop protection against the influenza viruses expected to circulate during the flu season.

Boots provides two main routes:

1. Free NHS flu vaccination – available to people who meet the NHS eligibility criteria.
2. Private flu vaccination – available to people who do not qualify for the NHS-funded service, subject to the service’s age, availability and other eligibility requirements. (boots.com)

The vaccination is normally given as an injection into the upper arm for adults.

Why Is the Flu Jab Important?

Influenza, commonly called flu, is an infectious viral illness that primarily affects the respiratory system. Although many healthy people recover without complications, flu can sometimes cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with certain underlying health conditions.

The flu vaccine helps the body develop an immune response against influenza viruses. Vaccination can reduce the risk of developing flu and can also help reduce the risk of serious illness.

Boots states that protection from the flu vaccination usually takes up to two weeks to develop. (boots.com)

Why is it given every year?

The flu vaccination is recommended annually because:

• Protection decreases over time.
• Influenza viruses change from season to season.
• The vaccine is updated to provide protection against strains expected to circulate.
• A previous year’s vaccination may not provide adequate protection against the viruses circulating in the current season.

Therefore, receiving a flu vaccination in one year does not mean that a person is automatically protected for the following flu season. (boots.com)

Who Can Get a Free NHS Flu Jab at Boots?

Eligibility depends on the current NHS flu vaccination programme and can vary between UK nations.

For England’s 2026/27 programme, the NHS offers vaccination to groups at increased risk of serious complications from flu. These include:

• People aged 65 years and over
• People aged 18–64 with certain long-term health conditions
• Pregnant women
• People living in care homes
• Main carers of older or disabled people, or people receiving a carer’s allowance
• People with certain learning disabilities
• People with a BMI of 40 or above
• Certain other groups identified within the NHS programme

Frontline health and social care workers may also be eligible through their employer or, in specified circumstances, through NHS vaccination services. (nhs.uk)

Boots notes that its NHS flu vaccination eligibility varies according to the country and may be updated during the winter season. (boots.com)

Who May Need a Private Boots Flu Jab?

People who do not meet the criteria for the free NHS flu vaccination may be able to obtain the vaccine through Boots’ private Winter Flu Jab Service.

According to the current Boots service information, the private service is available in most participating stores for people aged 16 years and over, with selected stores offering the private service for children aged 11–15 years. Availability and eligibility can vary by store. (boots.com)

The current listed price for the Boots private flu vaccination is £21.95 (At the time of writing, Boots lists the private flu vaccination at £21.95. Prices and availability may change, so readers should check the official Boots booking page before making an appointment.), while the listed price in Jersey is £26.95. When Can You Get the Boots Flu Jab?

The timing depends on the NHS seasonal vaccination programme and vaccine availability.

For the 2026/27 season in England, NHS England states that vaccination should begin from 1 September 2026 for children, pregnant women and some adults, while other eligible groups are scheduled to begin from 1 October 2026. The programme is intended to continue through the winter season. (NHS England)

NHS England has specifically announced that children and pregnant women can begin receiving their flu vaccinations from 1 September 2026. (NHS England)

Because Boots is a community pharmacy provider, individual stores may have different appointment availability.

What Happens During a Boots Flu Jab Appointment?

The appointment generally involves several steps.

1. Pre-vaccination Questions

The pharmacy professional will ask questions about your health and vaccination history to determine whether the vaccination is appropriate.

It is important to provide accurate information, particularly about previous serious allergic reactions and relevant medical conditions.

2. Consultation

The pharmacist or appropriately trained healthcare professional may discuss:

• Your eligibility
• The vaccination
• Potential side effects
• Relevant medical considerations
• Any questions or concerns you may have

3. Administration of the Vaccine

The vaccine is generally injected into the upper arm.

Wearing a short-sleeved or loose-sleeved top can make the appointment easier. (boots.com)

4. After Vaccination

You can normally continue your usual activities unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.

How Long Does the Boots Flu Jab Take?

Boots states that a flu vaccination appointment takes approximately 10 minutes. (boots.com)

The actual injection itself takes only a short time, but the appointment includes the necessary consultation and suitability checks.

Side Effects of the Boots Flu Jab

Like any vaccine, the flu vaccine can cause side effects. Most are mild and short-lived.

Common effects may include:

• Pain or soreness at the injection site
• Mild fever or raised temperature
• Muscle aches
• Joint aches
• Feeling generally unwell for a short period

Boots specifically lists pain or soreness at the injection site, raised temperature, and aching muscles or joints among common side effects. (boots.com)

These reactions are generally temporary and reflect the body’s immune response to vaccination.

Can the Flu Jab Give You Flu?

No. The injected flu vaccine does not cause influenza.

The vaccine is designed to stimulate the immune system so that it can recognize and respond to influenza viruses. Some people may experience temporary aches, tiredness or a mild temperature after vaccination, which can sometimes be mistaken for flu.

How Effective Is the Boots Flu Jab?

No flu vaccine provides 100% protection.

The effectiveness of vaccination can vary depending on factors such as:

• The influenza strains circulating during the season
• How closely the vaccine matches circulating strains
• The person’s age
• The individual’s immune response
• The timing of vaccination

Even when vaccination does not completely prevent infection, it can still provide important protection against serious influenza illness.

Boots states that vaccination helps protect against catching flu and passing it to others, while NHS guidance emphasizes its role in reducing the risk of serious illness. (boots.com)

When Does Protection Start?

Protection does not develop immediately after receiving the vaccine.

According to Boots, it usually takes up to two weeks after vaccination for protection to develop. (boots.com)

This is one reason why seasonal vaccination is generally recommended before influenza activity becomes widespread.

Can You Have the Flu Jab and COVID-19 Vaccine Together?

The NHS states that the flu vaccine can be given at the same time as some other vaccines, including the COVID-19 and shingles vaccines, when appropriate. (nhs.uk)

However, whether you are eligible for another vaccine and whether it is offered at the same appointment depends on the current vaccination programme and clinical circumstances.

For the 2026/27 programme, NHS England encourages co-administration of flu and COVID-19 vaccines where appropriate. (NHS England)

Who Should Not Have the Flu Vaccine?

Most people who are eligible can safely receive the flu vaccine.

However, the NHS states that a person should not have the flu vaccine if they have previously experienced a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine. (nhs.uk)

Some flu vaccines used in the UK contain egg protein, so people with relevant allergies should discuss vaccination with a healthcare professional.

If you are unsure whether vaccination is appropriate for you, speak with a pharmacist, GP or another qualified healthcare professional.

Boots Flu Jab During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an important indication for seasonal influenza vaccination because pregnant women can be at increased risk of complications from influenza.

For the 2026/27 NHS programme in England, pregnant women are among the groups who can receive vaccination from 1 September 2026. (NHS England)

If you are pregnant, your healthcare professional can advise you about the appropriate vaccination and where it can be obtained.

Boots Flu Jab for Older Adults

Adults aged 65 years and over are among the groups eligible for the free NHS flu vaccine in England.

For the 2026/27 programme, NHS guidance includes people who will reach age 65 by 31 March 2027. (nhs.uk)

Older adults are prioritized because the risk of severe influenza complications generally increases with age.

Boots Flu Jab for People with Long-Term Conditions

People with certain long-term health conditions may be eligible for the free NHS flu vaccination.

Examples include certain:

• Respiratory diseases
• Heart conditions
• Kidney diseases
• Liver diseases
• Neurological conditions
• Endocrine conditions such as diabetes
• Conditions associated with a weakened immune system

The precise eligibility criteria should be checked against the current NHS programme because not every condition automatically qualifies. (nhs.uk)

Boots Flu Jab for Children

Children’s influenza vaccination is handled differently from adult vaccination.

For England’s 2026/27 programme, NHS England has stated that children can begin vaccination from 1 September 2026. Most school-aged children are offered vaccination through the school programme, while eligible younger children and children with certain health conditions may be vaccinated through NHS services. (NHS England)

Boots also offers a private flu vaccination service for children at selected stores, subject to age and local availability. The current Boots information states that selected stores may provide the private service for children aged 11–15 years. (boots.com)
